A gorilla named Ivan narrates his life in a mall department store — gentle, funny, and quietly heartbreaking. Kids who love animals will be hooked from page one.

Auggie Pullman just wants to be an ordinary kid — but his face ensures he never will be. A book that sticks with you long after the last page.

Greek gods living in modern-day America? Yes please. Percy discovers he’s the son of Poseidon and suddenly everything — monsters included — makes sense.

Melody has the most powerful mind in her school — but because of her cerebral palsy, no one knows it. Raw, funny, and completely gripping. One of those books kids talk about for weeks.

A boy stumbles into a secret archipelago where mythical creatures still exist — and they’re dying. Sweeping, imaginative, and utterly magical. Perfect for kids who devoured Narnia.

A robot named Roz washes up on a wild island and must learn to survive — then to parent a gosling. Beautiful, tender, and surprisingly moving. Kids and grown-ups love this one equally.

Maizy spends the summer at her grandparents’ restaurant in a small Minnesota town and slowly uncovers her family’s hidden history. Warm, funny, and quietly profound — great for sparking conversations about identity and belonging.

An orphan boy discovers he’s a wizard and heads off to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. The one that turned a generation of kids into readers — and still does.

Ten-year-old Mia manages a motel front desk while her parents work and she navigates racism, poverty, and the American dream. Based on the author’s own childhood — honest, funny, and completely compelling.

Greg Heffley just wants to be popular. The journal format, stick-figure comics, and relatable middle school chaos make this one kids always ask to read again.
Every kid in this age group is different. Some 9 year olds are already reading chapter books well above their grade level; some 12 year olds still love a funny, fast-paced story with no agenda. A few things to keep in mind:
Let them choose. Even if a book looks easy, reading for pleasure is the goal, not a workout.
Mix it up. A funny book like Diary of a Wimpy Kid pairs nicely with something more meaningful like Wonder or Front Desk.
Series are your friend. Percy Jackson and Harry Potter are both long series — once a kid is hooked, reading takes care of itself.
All of these titles are available at Vancouver Public Library branches across the city — Burnaby, Richmond, Surrey, North Vancouver, and Coquitlam libraries carry them too. Most are also available as e-books and audiobooks through the VPL app, which is completely free with your library card.
