Theatre Under the Stars (TUTS) is an annual outdoor theatre event that brings together talented performers, captivating productions, and the enchanting backdrop of Stanley Park. We have been bringing the family to TUTS since the oldest was young. It has been a family tradition of ours to attend every summer. This year, the “audiences are invited to witness the magic that comes from taking risks, celebrating differences, and, above all, accepting others for who they truly are in this summer’s endearing and exhilarating season of Theatre Under the Stars (TUTS), which presents The Prom and Roald Dahl’s Matilda The Musical, on stage July 6–August 26, 2023, at Stanley Park’s scenic Malkin Bowl.”

5 Reasons Why You Should Attend Theatre Under the Stars

  • The History of Theatre Under the Stars: Theatre Under the Stars traces its roots back to the 1940s when a group of Vancouverites had the visionary idea of staging musical productions in an open-air setting. Since its inception, TUTS has aimed to make live theatre accessible to all, creating an inclusive environment where people can come together to enjoy the performing arts.
  • Enchanting Productions: One of the reasons Theatre Under the Stars has become such a beloved event is its commitment to presenting high-quality, family-friendly productions. Every summer, TUTS stages two main shows, often featuring popular musicals and plays that appeal to a wide range of audiences. From classics like “The Sound of Music” and “Beauty and the Beast” to contemporary favorites like “Mamma Mia!” and “Mary Poppins,” each production is carefully selected to engage and entertain theatregoers of all ages.
  • The Outdoor Venue: Stanley Park’s Malkin Bowl: Theatre Under the Stars takes full advantage of Vancouver’s breathtaking natural surroundings. The performances are held at the iconic Malkin Bowl, an open-air theatre nestled within Stanley Park. Surrounded by towering trees and nestled amidst nature, the venue adds an extra touch of magic to the theatrical experience. Audiences can enjoy the warm summer breeze, marvel at the starry sky above, and be serenaded by talented performers on a beautiful outdoor stage.
  • Exceptional Talent: TUTS consistently showcases the immense talent of both local performers and professionals from across Canada. From the lead actors and actresses to the ensemble cast, each member brings their unique skills and passion to the stage, creating unforgettable performances. The commitment and dedication of the cast and crew shine through in every aspect of the production, from the captivating singing and dancing to the intricate set designs and costumes.
  • A Night to Remember: Attending Theatre Under the Stars is more than just watching a show; it’s an immersive experience that creates lasting memories. As the sun sets and the lights illuminate the stage, the anticipation in the air is palpable. Whether you come with friends, family, or even on your own, the communal atmosphere of TUTS fosters a sense of togetherness and shared enjoyment. From joyful sing-alongs to moments of laughter and tears, each performance is a journey that connects audience members to the magic of live theatre.

When attending Theatre Under the Stars, it’s important to come prepared to ensure a comfortable and enjoyable experience.

Here is a list of items you may want to bring:

  • Picnic Blanket or Lawn Chairs: There are chairs to sit, but if you decide to watch the show in the lawn area, it’s a good idea to bring something to sit on. A picnic blanket or lawn chairs will provide you with a comfortable seating option.
  • Warm Clothing & Blankets: Even during the summer months, evenings in Vancouver can get chilly, especially near the park. Bring layers such as a light jacket or sweater to stay warm as the temperature drops. We always bring some blankets to keep warm and cozy.
  • Bug Repellent: Being in a park setting, insects can be a common presence. To avoid any discomfort from bug bites, consider bringing bug repellent to keep the critters away. This time we used The Natural Patch Co, “BuzzPatch Mosquito Repellent Patches” and it worked great! There were so many bugs, but we got no bites! • Snacks and Drinks: While food and drinks are available for purchase at Theatre Under the Stars, you may want to bring your own snacks and beverages. Pack some light refreshments like sandwiches, fruits, drinks, water bottles, and your kid’s favourite snacks to enjoy during the performance.
  • Cash and/or Cards: It’s a good idea to bring some cash and/or cards for any purchases you may want to make, such as food, drinks, or merchandise. While some vendors may accept card payments, it’s always good to have cash as a backup. We usually get a bag of popcorn, hot chocolate (I usually bring their water bottle to pour the cup of hot chocolate in) and a bag of candies.
  • Umbrella or Rain Gear: Vancouver’s weather can be unpredictable, and rain showers are not uncommon. Check the weather forecast and bring an umbrella or rain gear if there’s a chance of rain.
  • Sunglasses and Sunscreen: During daytime performances, the sun can be quite strong. Protect yourself from the sun’s rays by wearing sunglasses and applying sunscreen to exposed skin.
  • Camera or Smartphone: Capture memories of the event by bringing a camera or using your smartphone to take photos or videos of the theatre before the performances and the beautiful outdoor setting. Remember, you can’t take photos during the performance.

Roald Dahl’s Matilda The Musical

This year, we watched Roald Dahl’s Matilda The Musical and it was wonderful. Coincidentally, we are reading this book, so this musical was perfect timing. “A whimsical musical that showcases all of the best elements of Roald Dahl’s iconic storytelling – bravery, rebelliousness, and a sharp wit that has gripped audiences for the past 60-plus years – Roald Dahl’s Matilda The Musical is chock full of humour, heart, and hope. Set in a small English village, a brilliant little girl with a lively imagination is ignored at home by her parents and bullied at school by her headmistress. Through the strength of her imaginative storytelling ability, she uses her surprising magical powers to ‘fight for the right to be a little bit naughty.’ With toe-tapping songs and outstanding dance numbers featuring a talented cast of young people, this family-friendly stage phenomenon is the perfect TUTS introduction for young audiences. Roald Dahl’s Matilda The Musical has also received the Netflix treatment, released as a feature film on the streaming platform in 2022, starring Emma Thompson as Miss Trunchbull.” We really enjoyed it and the young girl playing Matilda couldn’t be more perfect. This is a fun musical for all families.

The Prom

Another musical featured in Theatre Under the Stars is, The Prom. “Set at a small-town high school, The Prom balances unabashed hopefulness, heartfelt vulnerability, and hard-hitting hilarity. The show opens with four, down-on-their-luck Broadway actors looking to make a change. Desperate to improve their public image, they search for a high-profile charitable cause to support. They find Emma – a high school senior whose prom has just been cancelled because she planned to attend with her girlfriend. But their scheming quickly goes sideways, and they ultimately come to learn what everyone is searching for – a place to belong. A relatively new musical, which debuted on Broadway in November 2018, The Prom was most recently produced as a Netflix movie starring Meryl Streep, in 2020.”

Theatre Under the Stars in Vancouver offers a captivating blend of outdoor ambiance, top-notch performances, and timeless stories. Whether you’re a theatre enthusiast or simply looking for a memorable cultural experience, TUTS promises to transport you to a world of music, laughter, and enchantment. So, grab your picnic blanket, bring your loved ones, and immerse yourself in the magic of Theatre Under the Stars, an annual summer tradition that continues to captivate audiences and celebrate the power of live theatre.
