Carousel Theatre for Young People presents the West Coast premiere of the internationally lauded solo play Alphonse, a Theaturtle Production at Granville Island’s Picnic Pavilion (267 Old Bridge Walk), from May 2-7, 2023. Hailed as “unmissable” (BBC Edinburgh), “a celebration of the imagination” (The Scotsman), and “a modern classic” (Toronto Star), Alphonse is a heartwarming tale of a missing child who meanders along a country road, weaving an intricate web of stories, as everyone is searching for him: parents, friends, teachers, the police. What they find is the thing we often give up in order to grow up. Full of wild adventure and magical storytelling, Alphonse is a dazzling journey of discovery for children, while imploring adults to rediscover their imagination. Suitable for ages 5 and up, there’s something for everyone to enjoy as a single actor takes on 17 roles. For this West Coast premiere, actor Gabe Maharjan will alternate with emerging talent Evelyn Barber.
Written by one of Quebec’s most celebrated playwrights, Wajdi Mouawad is best known as a Governor General Award-winning playwright whose play Incendies was adapted into Denis Villeneuve’s the Academy Award nominated film in 2011.
