Lunar New Year is on Saturday, February 10th, marking the arrival of the Year of the Dragon. Anticipation is running high as numerous exciting activities unfold, including the Lunar New Year parade in Chinatown. We welcome back UBC Kung Fu Club to show us their exciting lion dance and kung fu performance. There will be also exciting workshops for you to participate in! Lunar New Year, also known as the Spring Festival, is the most important traditional holiday in Chinese culture. This year is the Year of the Dragon, a creature deeply cherished in Chinese culture. Preceding the New Year is a thorough house cleaning, symbolizing the removal of bad luck. Homes are adorned with vibrant red decorations and spring couplets with auspicious words, known as “chunlian.” The heart of the festival lies in the reunion dinner, where families come together to share a great meal and strengthen bonds.

Explore traditional New Year customs, try writing couplets, and learn about dragon imagery throughout history while drawing your own dragon. Storytelling, snacks, and daikon cake tasting are also available throughout the day.
